What does a Quality Manager do?

A Quality Manager is responsible for ensuring that products and services meet customer expectations. They develop and implement quality control systems, monitor production processes, and test finished products. Quality Managers also work with suppliers to ensure that materials meet quality standards.
Quality Manager job duties include:
- Plan, direct, or coordinate quality assurance activities
- Collect and analyze data to identify areas for improvement in the quality system
- Develop or implement quality assurance policies and procedures
- Coordinate quality assurance activities with production activities
- Design or implement quality control training programs
- Audit manufacturing processes and product quality
- Inspect products for defects and noncompliance with quality standards
- Investigate customer complaints related to product quality
- Analyze test results to determine whether products meet specified standards
- Recommend changes in methods or materials to improve product quality
Quality Manager Job Requirements
A Quality Manager typically needs a bachelor's degree in quality management, engineering, or a related field. Many Quality Managers are certified through the American Society for Quality (ASQ). Experience in management, engineering, and quality assurance is also helpful. Quality Managers must be able to use statistical analysis and quality improvement tools, as well as have strong communication and interpersonal skills.

How to become a Quality Manager
There are many different paths that one can take to become a quality manager. However, most quality managers have at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, business, or a related field. Many quality managers also have experience working in quality assurance or quality control. In order to become a quality manager, it is important to have strong problem-solving skills and be able to effectively communicate with other members of the organization. Quality managers must also be able to develop and implement quality plans and procedures.
