What does an HR Director do?

The HR Director is responsible for the overall management of the human resources function in an organization. They develop and implement policies and programs related to employee recruitment, selection, training, compensation and benefits, labor relations and employee relations. The HR Director also works closely with senior management to develop and implement organizational strategies.
HR Director job duties include:
- Develops and administers various human resources plans and procedures for all company personnel
- Plans and conducts new employee orientation to foster positive attitude toward organizational objectives
- Administers benefits programs such as life, health, and dental insurance, pension plans, vacation, sick leave, leave of absence, and employee assistance
- Keeps records of benefits plans participation such as insurance coverage, vacation, sick leave, and medical leave
- Develops and maintains a human resources system that meets top management information needs
- Oversees the analysis of data compiled through human resources surveys and recommends solutions to identified problems
- Analyzes wage and salary reports and data to determine competitive compensation plan
- Writes directives advising department managers of Company policy regarding equal employment opportunities, sexual harassment, etc.
- Investigates accidents and prepares reports for insurance carrier
- Counsel employees on topics such as career planning, performance appraisals, or personal problems
HR Director Job Requirements
An HR Director typically has a bachelor's degree in human resources, business, or a related field. They may also have a master's degree or certification in human resources. They must have several years of experience working in human resources, preferably at a management level. They should be familiar with all aspects of human resources, including recruitment, benefits, training, and development.
