A Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the design of mechanical systems and components. They work with other engineers and designers to create products that meet the needs of customers and clients. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create models and prototypes of products. Senior Mechanical Design Engineers also test products to ensure that they meet safety and quality standards.

- Develops mechanical and electromechanical products by studying customer requirements; researching and testing manufacturing and assembly methods and materials; soliciting observations from operators.
- Develops mechanical products by designing and modifying components; using simulation tools to test designs.
- Evaluates mechanical and electromechanical systems and products by designing and conducting research programs; applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, and materials science.
- Confirms system’s and components’ capabilities by designing feasibility and testing methods; testing properties.
- Develops manufacturing processes by designing and modifying equipment for fabricating, building, assembling, and installing components.
- Assures system and product quality by designing testing methods; testing finished- product and system capabilities; confirming fabrication, assembly, and installation processes.
- Prepares product reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
- Provides engineering information by answering questions and requests.
- Maintains product data base by writing computer programs; entering data.
- Completes projects by training and guiding technicians.
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer Job Requirements
A Senior Mechanical Design Engineer typically needs a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. They also need experience working as a mechanical engineer, and might need to be certified through the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). In some cases, a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer might need a Master's degree or higher.

How to become a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
In order to become a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, one must first complete an accredited engineering program. Once an individual has completed their engineering program, they must then pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. After passing the FE exam, the engineer must gain four years of experience in an engineering role. After four years of experience, the engineer can then take the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam. Once the PE exam is passed, the engineer is then able to apply for their state license. After becoming licensed, the engineer can then apply for Senior Mechanical Design Engineer positions.
