How to become a Senior Design Engineer
There are many paths that one can take to become a Senior Design Engineer. The most common path is to first obtain a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited university. After completing a four-year engineering program, the student should then complete a two-year master's program in engineering or a related field. Once the student has obtained their master's degree, they should then take and pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. After passing the FE exam, the student should obtain four years of professional engineering experience. Once the student has obtained four years of professional engineering experience, they should then take and pass the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PPE) exam. After passing the PPE exam, the student will be officially licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE). The final step to becoming a Senior Design Engineer is to obtain a position at a company where they can work their way up the ladder. Some companies may require their Senior Design Engineers to have a PhD in engineering or a related field, but this is not always necessary.
