- Prepare construction documents using CAD software for submission to city or county building department.
- Incorporate green design solutions into architectural plans.
Architectural Draftsman Job Requirements
An Architectural Draftsman is responsible for creating drawings and plans for buildings and other structures. They typically have an Associate's degree in drafting or a related field, and may be certified by the American Design Drafting Association. Many employers also require at least 2 years of experience in the field.

How to become an Architectural Draftsman
There are many ways to become an architectural draftsman. One way is to attend a trade school or college that offers a two or four year degree in drafting. Many community colleges offer this type of program. Once you have completed the educational requirements, you will need to obtain certification from the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The AIA offers several levels of certification, including the Architectural Drafting Technician (ADT) and the Architectural Draftsman (ADD). To become certified, you must pass an exam administered by the AIA.
Another way to become an architectural draftsman is to complete an apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship programs are typically sponsored by local chapters of the AIA and last four years. If you have experience working in the construction industry, you may be able to find a job as a draftsman without completing a formal education or apprenticeship program.
