How to become a Security Technician
In order to become a Security Technician, one must first complete a training program at a vocational school or community college. Many of these programs last between six and twelve months and cover topics such as basic electronics, alarm systems, and CCTV installation. After completing a training program, most states require Security Technicians to obtain a license before they can begin working. Some states have their own licensing exams, while others accept the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) exam.
Once licensed, Security Technicians can find work in a variety of settings, including residential homes, businesses, and government buildings. They typically work for security companies or contractors and are responsible for installing and maintaining security systems. In some cases, Security Technicians may also be asked to provide customer service or technical support for security system users.
With experience, Security Technicians can advance to supervisory or management positions within their company. Some may also choose to start their own security business. Those who are interested in teaching or conducting research may pursue careers in academia.
