A certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA) works under the supervision of an occupational therapist to provide rehabilitation services to patients with physical, mental, or developmental disabilities. Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant Job Requirements

A certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA) must have an associate’s degree from an accredited occupational therapy assistant program. They must also pass a national certification exam administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After passing the NBCOT exam, the COTA must apply for state licensure. Most states require continuing education to maintain licensure. Some states may have additional requirements.

How to become a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant

There are a few steps that one must take in order to become a certified occupational therapy assistant. The first is to complete an accredited occupational therapy assistant program. Once you have completed the accredited program, you will then need to pass the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) exam. After passing the NBCOT exam, you will be a certified occupational therapy assistant and will be able to practice in most states.
