A carpenter is a person who builds and repairs wooden structures. Carpenters use a variety of tools to cut, shape, and assemble wood. They may also install windows, doors, and cabinets.
Carpenter job duties include:
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches to determine specifications and calculate requirements
- Prepare layouts in conformance to building codes, using measuring tools
- Measure, cut, shape, assemble and join materials made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel and other materials
- Construct frameworks including walls, floors and doorframes
- Install insulation, interior finishes such as drywall
- Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level
- Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment
- Operate power tools such as drills, saws, routers and sanders
- Select and order lumber and other required materials
Carpenter Job Requirements
Carpenters are skilled tradespeople who work with wood. They must have a high school diploma or equivalent, although many carpenters learn their trade through an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships typically last three to four years and include on-the-job training as well as classroom instruction in blueprint reading, mathematics, and other topics related to the carpentry trade. Carpenters must be physically strong and able to lift heavy materials. They also need good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.

How to become a Carpenter
