How to become an Industrial Mechanic

An industrial mechanic is a skilled tradesperson who maintains and repairs machinery in factories, power plants and other industrial settings. Industrial mechanics are also known as millwrights, maintenance mechanics and factory maintenance technicians.

The first step to becoming an industrial mechanic is to complete a high school education or equivalent. Many industrial mechanics also have completed post-secondary education in trade or technical schools, although this is not always required. Once you have the necessary education, you will need to find an apprenticeship or on-the-job training program in order to gain the experience required to become a journeyman industrial mechanic.

Apprenticeship programs typically last four years and combine on-the-job training with classroom instruction. During your apprenticeship, you will learn about blueprint reading, welding, hydraulics and pneumatics, mechanical systems and more. Once you have completed your apprenticeship, you will be able to write the journeyman industrial mechanic certification exam.

To become a certified journeyman industrial mechanic, you must have at least three years of full-time work experience as an apprentice industrial mechanic. You will also need to pass a written and practical exam administered by your province or territory. Once you are certified, you will be able to work independently as an industrial mechanic.
