What does an FEA Engineer do?
Published 3 min read
A/an FEA Engineer is responsible for the analysis of engineering problems using the finite element method. They work with engineers and designers to create models of products and structures, and then use these models to simulate how they will respond to real-world conditions. FEAs can be used to study a wide range of problems, from the stress on a bridge during an earthquake, to the flow of blood through a heart valve.
FEA Engineer job duties include:
- Develop and implement finite element analysis (FEA) models to simulate mechanical behavior of products
- Validate accuracy of FEA models by comparing results to experimental data
- Use FEA results to optimize product designs for strength, stiffness, weight, manufacturability, etc.
- Collaborate with engineers of other disciplines (e.g. mechanical, electrical, software) to ensure integrated product design
- Create and maintain technical documentation for FEA models and analyses
- Stay up-to-date on latest FEA methods and technologies
- Support design and development teams during prototyping and testing phases
- Provide training and mentorship to less experienced engineers
- Present findings and recommendations to management
FEA Engineer Job Requirements
An FEA Engineer typically has a Bachelor's degree in engineering, although some positions may require a Master's degree. Certification is not typically required, but may be beneficial. Experience with FEA software is necessary, and experience in the specific industry in which the engineer will be working is also helpful.
