What does an Armed Guard do?

An armed guard is a security professional who is responsible for the safety and security of a designated area. They are typically armed with a firearm and may also have other weapons, such as pepper spray or a baton. Armed guards are often employed by private security firms, but they may also work for government agencies or organizations.
Armed Guard job duties include:
- Patrol premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion and ensure security of doors, windows, and gates
- Monitor and authorize entrance and departure of employees, visitors, and other persons to guard against theft and maintain security of premises
- Write reports of daily activities and irregularities, such as equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons, or unusual occurrences
- Call police or fire departments in cases of emergency, such as fire or presence of unauthorized persons
- Circulate among visitors, patrons, and employees to preserve order and protect property
- Answer alarms and investigate disturbances
- Apprehend or evict violators from premises, using force when necessary
- Inspect and adjust security systems, equipment, and machinery to ensure operational use
- Prepare incident reports to document daily activities and irregularities
Armed Guard Job Requirements
In order to work as an armed guard, an individual must first obtain the necessary education and certification. Many armed guards have a high school diploma or equivalent, although some jobs may require additional training. Once certified, an armed guard must then gain experience working in the field. Many armed guards start their careers working for security companies, but some may eventually find employment with government agencies or private businesses.

How to become an Armed Guard
In order to become an armed guard, one must first complete a training program that is specific to the state in which they wish to work. After completing the training program, the individual must then pass a written exam and a firearms proficiency test. Once these requirements have been met, the armed guard can then apply for a position with a security company.
