A structural design engineer is responsible for the structural design of buildings and other structures. They work with architects and other engineers to ensure that the structure can support the loads it is designed to carry, and that it is safe and stable.

- Investigate root cause of failure of mechanical components using analytical methods such as finite element analysis or fracture mechanics analysis.
- Select materials for use in product based on properties such as strength, density, heat resistance, electrical conductivity, or corrosion resistance.
- Specify system components or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
- Estimate costs and submit bids for engineering projects.
- Oversee installation, operation, maintenance, and repair to ensure that machines and equipment are installed and functioning according to specifications.
Structural Design Engineer Job Requirements
A Structural Design Engineer typically has a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, although some positions may require a Master's degree. Many Structural Design Engineers are licensed Professional Engineers (PE). Some employers may also require certification from the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). Structural Design Engineers typically have 5-10 years of experience in structural engineering before being promoted to a senior position.

How to become a Structural Design Engineer
A structural design engineer is responsible for the design and analysis of structures, including buildings, bridges, towers, and other support systems. They must have a strong understanding of mechanics and physics, and be able to use this knowledge to calculate the loads that a structure can support. They must also be able to use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create models and drawings of their designs.
Structural design engineers typically need at least a bachelor’s degree in engineering, although some positions may require a master’s degree. Many engineers also choose to become licensed professional engineers (PEs). To become a licensed PE, engineers must pass two exams: the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, which is taken after earning a bachelor’s degree, and the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PPE) exam, which is taken after several years of experience.
If you are interested in becoming a structural design engineer, you should first earn a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited school.
