What does a Server do?

A server is a computer that provides data to other computers. It may provide data to computers on the same network, or to computers on the Internet.
Server job duties include:
- Greeting guests and taking their drink orders
- Memorizing the menu and being able to make recommendations
- Busing tables and resetting them for the next guests
- Answering questions about menu items and how they are prepared
- Delivering food to guests in a timely manner
- Checking on guests throughout their meal to ensure they are satisfied
- Refilling drinks as needed
- Clearing plates and utensils from the table when guests are finished
- Processing payments and thanking guests for their business
Server Job Requirements
There are no formal education requirements for servers, although many restaurants prefer servers who have at least a high school diploma. Many restaurants also require servers to complete a certification program before they can begin working. Some states also have specific certification requirements for alcohol service. In addition to certification, most restaurants require servers to have at least 6 months of experience working in a restaurant.
