What does a Recreation Therapist do?

A recreation therapist helps people with physical, mental, or social disabilities to improve their quality of life through recreational activities. They may work with individuals or groups, and they may provide therapy in a variety of settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, community centers, and schools.
Recreation Therapist job duties include:
- Plan, direct, and coordinate recreation-related activities, such as arts and crafts, sports, games, music, and drama
- Monitor participants’ physical and emotional well-being
- Select and train volunteers and staff
- Develop budgets and approve expenditures
- Evaluate program effectiveness and submit reports to superiors
- Confer with medical staff to plan programs that will benefit patients physically, mentally, and emotionally
- Obtain supplies and equipment needed for program activities
- Promote recreation programs through public relations efforts such as news releases, open houses, or participation in community events
- Collaborate with other professionals to develop recreational therapy programs
Recreation Therapist Job Requirements
A bachelor’s degree in recreation therapy or a related field is required for most entry-level positions. Some employers may require certification from the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC). Although not required, experience working with the target population of the position (for example, children, older adults, people with physical disabilities) may be helpful.

How to become a Recreation Therapist
There are many steps that one must take in order to become a recreation therapist. The first step is to obtain a bachelor’s degree in recreation therapy from an accredited university. Once you have obtained your degree, you will need to pass the National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. After you have passed the exam, you will need to obtain a state license in order to practice recreation therapy.
