What does a Pool Technician do?

A pool technician is responsible for the maintenance and repair of swimming pools. They may also be responsible for the installation of new pools.
Pool Technician job duties include:
- Inspects pool and equipment on a daily basis, making note of any necessary repairs
- Maintains cleanliness of entire pool area, including deck and furniture
- Skims surface of pool to remove debris
- Vacuums pool to remove dirt and debris from bottom
- Backwashes filter as needed to maintain proper filtration
- Checks chlorine and pH levels in pool water and adjusts as needed
- Adds chemicals to pool as needed to maintain proper chemical balance
- Replaces broken or damaged tiles as needed
- Repairs leaks in pool or equipment as needed
Pool Technician Job Requirements
Most pool technicians have a high school diploma or equivalent, although some employers may prefer candidates with postsecondary education, such as an associate's degree in aquatics technology. Many community colleges and vocational schools offer programs in this field. Some states require pool technicians to be licensed as pool operators. Certification is available from the National Swimming Pool Foundation and the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals. Although certification is not required, it may improve job prospects. Many pool technicians learn on the job through apprenticeships or other on-the-job training.

How to become a Pool Technician
