What does a Plumber do?

A plumber is a tradesperson who specializes in installing and maintaining systems used for potable (drinking) water, sewage and drainage in plumbing systems.
Plumber job duties include:
- Read blueprints and follow architectural plans to determine the best placement for pipes and other plumbing materials
- Cut, assemble and install pipes and fittings made from metals, PVC, fiberglass and other materials
- Select the type of pipe needed for a particular job
- Install supports for pipes, equipment and fixtures prior to installation
- Hang fixtures such as sinks, toilets and water heaters
- Repair or replace cracked or broken pipes
- Connect pipes to gas lines, water lines and drainage systems

- Use blowtorches, soldering irons and welding equipment to join metal pipes
- Operate drain snakes and root cutters to clear clogged drains
Plumber Job Requirements
Most plumbers are trained on the job, although some may have completed an apprenticeship or have formal technical training. Many states and localities require plumbers to be licensed. They may also be required to pass a background check and a drug test before being hired. (In some jurisdictions, plumbers must also have liability insurance.) Although many plumbing jobs require only on-the-job training, some employers prefer or require workers to have completed an apprenticeship program.
