What does a Loader Operator do?

A Loader Operator is responsible for operating a loader to load materials into trucks or other vehicles. They may also be responsible for unloading materials from trucks and other vehicles.

• Reads work order or follows oral instructions to ascertain materials or containers to be moved.
• Opens containers using steel cutters, crowbar, clawhammer, or other handtools.
• Loads and unloads materials onto or from pallets, trays, racks, and shelves by hand.
• Conveys materials from storage or work sites to designated area using handtruck, forklift, or other equipment.
• Sorts and places materials on racks, shelves, or in bins according to predetermined sequence such as size, type, style, color, or product code.
• Fills requisitions, work orders, or requests for materials, tools, or other stock items and distributes items to workers.
• Marks materials with identifying information.
• Examines stored products for defects and notifies supervisor of any damage.
• Maintains cleanliness of work area.

Loader Operator Job Requirements

Most Loader Operator positions require at least a high school diploma, although some employers may prefer or require postsecondary education, such as a certificate from a vocational school. Many Loader Operators also receive on-the-job training, which typically lasts several weeks to a few months. Some states have certification programs for Loader Operators.
