How to become a Lineman
There are many different types of linemen, but the most common are power linemen. Power linemen work on electrical power systems, including power lines and substations. They install, maintain, and repair the equipment that delivers electricity to homes and businesses.
Becoming a power lineman usually requires completing an apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship programs combine on-the-job training with classroom instruction. During an apprenticeship, linemen learn how to safely work with electricity, use specialized tools and equipment, and follow safety procedures.
Many utilities offer apprenticeship programs for aspiring linemen. Some community colleges also offer training programs that can lead to a career as a lineman. Completing an apprenticeship or training program is the best way to prepare for a career as a power lineman.
