What does a Crew Chief do?

A Crew Chief is responsible for the supervision of aircrew in the performance of their duties. They are also responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of aircraft.
Crew Chief job duties include:
- Supervise and coordinate the activities of ground crew in the loading, unloading, securing, and staging of aircraft cargo or baggage.
- Inspect cargo holds of aircraft before and after loading to ensure that holds are clean and free of debris.
- De-ice aircraft and equipment as necessary.
- Signal aircraft captains to indicate when it is safe to move aircraft.
- Operate ground power units to provide electricity to aircraft while on the ground.
- Start engines and operate auxiliary power units to maintain adequate power supply during ground operations.
- Supervise the fueling of aircraft and verify that fuel tanks are properly secured.
- Monitor weather conditions to determine if takeoffs and landings can be safely conducted.
- Prepare flight plans and other required paperwork prior to flights.
Crew Chief Job Requirements
A Crew Chief is responsible for the supervision of a flight crew. They are in charge of making sure that the aircraft is ready for takeoff and that all safety procedures are followed. A Crew Chief must have a high school diploma or equivalent, and must be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). They must also have experience working in aviation and knowledge of aircraft systems.

How to become a Crew Chief
A Crew Chief is responsible for the supervision and coordination of aircrew members during flight operations. They are also responsible for the safety and well-being of the crew. In order to become a Crew Chief, one must first have a high school diploma or equivalent. Then, they must complete Air Force Basic Military Training (AFBMT). After AFBMT, they must attend Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC) specific technical school. Once they have completed the technical school, they will be assigned to a unit where they will serve as a Crew Chief.
