What does an HVAC Service Technician do?

An HVAC service technician installs, maintains, and repairs heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. They inspect systems to identify any problems and perform preventative maintenance to keep the system running smoothly. When a problem does occur, they use their knowledge of how the system works to diagnose the issue and make the necessary repairs.
HVAC Service Technician job duties include:
- Inspect, clean, maintain, and repair HVAC systems and their components
- Diagnose problems with HVAC systems and their components
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and manuals
- Perform preventative maintenance on HVAC systems and their components
- Order and install replacement parts for HVAC systems and their components
- Keep accurate records of maintenance and repair work performed
- Train other personnel in the proper operation and maintenance of HVAC systems
- Respond to emergency calls for service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
- Stay up-to-date on new developments in the field of HVAC technology
HVAC Service Technician Job Requirements
Most HVAC service technicians have a high school diploma, although some jobs may require postsecondary education, and most technicians must complete a formal apprenticeship or training program. Many states and localities require HVAC technicians to be licensed, and certification from professional organizations can be helpful. Several years of experience working with HVAC systems is usually required before becoming a service technician.

How to become an HVAC Service Technician
