How to become an Anesthesiologist
There are many steps to becoming an anesthesiologist. The first step is to obtain a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. A student interested in becoming an anesthesiologist should major in science or a related field, and should take courses in organic chemistry, physics, and math. After completing a bachelor’s degree, the student must then attend medical school and complete a four-year residency in anesthesiology.
During medical school, the future anesthesiologist will take classes such as human anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and medical ethics. The student will also participate in clinical rotations, which will give him or her hands-on experience working with patients. After completing medical school, the student will then take the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). Once the student has passed the USMLE, he or she can begin a four-year residency in anesthesiology.
During the residency, the future anesthesiologist will receive training in all aspects of anesthesia care, including preoperative assessment of patients, administration of anesthesia during surgery, and postoperative care of patients. Upon completion of the residency program, the doctor will be eligible to take the American Board of Anesthesiology examination. Once the doctor has passed this examination, he or she will be certified as an anesthesiologist and can begin practicing medicine.
