What does an Aircraft Painter do?

Aircraft painters are responsible for painting aircrafts according to customer specifications. They must be able to operate and maintain painting equipment, as well as mix paints to achieve the desired color and consistency. Aircraft painters must also have a keen eye for detail in order to produce a high-quality finish.
Aircraft Painter job duties include:
- Applies primers and paint to aircraft surfaces, using brushes, rollers, spray guns, and other painting equipment
- Selects paints, primers, and finishes according to specifications
- May mix paints and thinners to obtain desired consistency and color
- Applies decals and other markings to aircraft surfaces
- Inspects painted surfaces for defects such as runs, sags, streaks, or bubbles and touch-up or rework as necessary
- Maintains cleanliness of work area and equipment
- May operate power washers or stripping machines to remove old paint from surfaces prior to painting
- May apply clear coats or other finishes to protect painted surfaces
- May maintain records of work completed
Aircraft Painter Job Requirements
Aircraft painters typically have a high school diploma or equivalent. Some jobs may require postsecondary education, and most painters complete an apprenticeship. Aircraft painters must be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Aircraft painters typically have 2 or more years of experience.

How to become an Aircraft Painter
To become an aircraft painter, you will need to have a high school diploma or equivalent. You will also need to be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver's license. You will need to complete an apprenticeship program that lasts for two to four years. During your apprenticeship, you will learn how to prepare surfaces for painting, how to mix paint, and how to apply paint. You will also learn about safety procedures and regulations. After you complete your apprenticeship, you will be able to work as an aircraft painter.
