What does a Switch Engineer do?

A Switch Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the switchgear and associated equipment in an electrical power system. This includes the selection of switchgear type, coordination of protection devices, development of switching schemes, and preparation of associated drawings and documents. The Switch Engineer may also be involved in the operation and maintenance of the switchgear.
Switch Engineer job duties include:
- Design, implement, and maintain switch engineering solutions for the company’s data center network
- Work with other engineers to design and implement high-availability switch configurations
- Plan and execute switch upgrades and migrations
- Monitor switch performance and capacity utilization, and recommend improvements as needed
- Diagnose and troubleshoot switch-related network issues
- Configure and manage VLANs, STP, port security, etc.
- Implement security policies on switches in accordance with company guidelines
- Monitor switch logs and alerts, and take appropriate action as needed
- Keep up to date on latest switch technologies and features, and make recommendations for adoption where appropriate
Switch Engineer Job Requirements
A Switch Engineer is responsible for the installation, configuration, and maintenance of switchgear in an electrical system. They must have a thorough understanding of electrical theory and principles, as well as experience working with electrical equipment. A Switch Engineer must be able to read and interpret blueprints and schematics, and have strong problem-solving skills. In addition, they must be able to work safely and effectively in a team environment.

How to become a Switch Engineer
