What does a Sprinkler Fitter do?

A sprinkler fitter installs, maintains, and repairs fire sprinkler systems.
Sprinkler Fitter job duties include:
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine layout of water supply, waste disposal, and storm drainage systems
- Install underground piping systems for storm drains, sanitary sewers, and water mains
- Locate and mark positions for pipe connections, passage holes, and fixtures in walls and floors
- Cut openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings
- Assemble and install valves, pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, or drainage systems, according to specifications or plumbing codes
- Fill pipes or plumbing fixtures with water or air to test for leaks
- Repair and maintain plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, etc.
- Plan layout of plumbing systems and materials needed for new construction or remodeling projects
- May use CAD software to develop plumbing designs
Sprinkler Fitter Job Requirements
A sprinkler fitter is a tradesperson who installs fire sprinkler systems. In order to become a sprinkler fitter, one must complete an apprenticeship program which typically lasts four years. During their apprenticeship, sprinkler fitters learn how to read blueprints, install pipes, and connect sprinkler heads. After completing their apprenticeship, sprinkler fitters must obtain a journeyman license in order to work independently. Some states also require sprinkler fitters to be certified by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). In addition to completing an apprenticeship program and obtaining a journeyman license or certification, many employers also require sprinkler fitters to have several years of experience working with fire sprinkler systems.

How to become a Sprinkler Fitter
