How to become a Relay Technician
A Relay Technician is an important part of the electrical engineering team. They install, maintain, and troubleshoot relays and associated equipment. A Relay Technician is responsible for keeping the power flowing to homes and businesses.
Becoming a Relay Technician requires completing an accredited electrical engineering program. Many community colleges offer two-year programs that lead to an Associate's degree in electrical engineering. A four-year college or university will offer a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
After completing an accredited electrical engineering program, the next step to becoming a Relay Technician is to obtain a professional engineer's license. Each state has different requirements for licensure, but all states require passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. The FE exam is administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).
Once you have obtained your professional engineer's license, you are eligible to take the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam in the area of electrical engineering. Once you pass the PE exam, you will be a licensed professional engineer and can work as a Relay Technician.
