A refrigeration technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration systems. They may work in a variety of settings, such as grocery stores, restaurants, and hospitals.

- Inspects and tests refrigeration equipment to diagnose malfunctions.
- Repairs or replaces defective parts, such as compressors, evaporators, condensers, motors, and controls.
- Charges refrigeration systems with Freon or other gases, using charging and recovery equipment.
- Adjusts functional parts of air conditioning systems, such as expansion valves and blower motors.
- Connects hoses and piping between units, using hand tools and power tools.
- Starts system to test its performance and to verify the adequacy of repairs.
- Keeps records of maintenance and repair work performed.
- May purchase replacement parts from suppliers.
- May install new air conditioning systems in homes or commercial buildings.
Refrigeration Technician Job Requirements
Most employers prefer candidates who have completed a postsecondary program in refrigeration technology. Although certification is not always required, it may give jobseekers a competitive edge. Many professional organizations, such as the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), offer certification for refrigeration technicians. Some states require technicians to be licensed. To become licensed, technicians must usually pass an exam that covers safety and technical topics. Employers also value experience, so candidates who have worked in the field—even if they have not completed a formal education program—may have an advantage.
