What does a Material Handler do?

A material handler is responsible for the movement of materials within a company. This may include loading and unloading trucks, moving materials to and from storage areas, and operating machinery such as forklifts.
Material Handler job duties include:
- Unload inbound shipments safely and move product to storage locations.
- Efficiently pick customer orders for shipment, ensuring that the correct products are selected.
- Load outbound shipments safely and securely.
- Operate warehouse machinery, such as forklifts and pallet jacks, to move products.
- Keep accurate records of all products incoming and outgoing.
- Inspect products for damage or defects and report any issues to a supervisor.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area at all times.
- Follow all safety protocols while working in the warehouse.
- Assist with other tasks as needed, such as packing orders or stocking shelves.
Material Handler Job Requirements
There are no formal education requirements for a material handler, although some employers may prefer candidates with a high school diploma or equivalent. Many material handlers learn on the job, although some may receive formal training through an apprenticeship or vocational program. Some employers may require certification from the American Society for Quality (ASQ) or other organizations. Experience is typically required for most material handler positions.
