What does a Low Voltage Technician do?

A low voltage technician is a professional who installs and maintains low-voltage electrical systems. These systems can include anything from security and surveillance systems to lighting control systems. Low voltage technicians must have a strong understanding of electrical theory and be able to work with complex wiring diagrams. They must also be able to troubleshoot problems and make repairs as needed.
Low Voltage Technician job duties include:
- Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, submittals and specifications to determine layout of low voltage systems
- Install, terminate and test various types of low voltage cabling including but not limited to: fiber optic, CAT6, CAT5e, coaxial and twisted pair
- Install various types of low voltage equipment including but not limited to: telephone systems, security systems, CCTV systems, access control systems and audio/visual systems
- Troubleshoot and repair various types of low voltage systems
- Maintain accurate documentation of all installed systems
- Assist in the training of other technicians on proper installation and troubleshooting techniques
- Comply with all safety regulations and standards
- Other duties as assigned
Low Voltage Technician Job Requirements
Most low voltage technicians have at least a high school diploma, although some jobs may require postsecondary education, and most employers provide on-the-job training. Some states require low voltage technicians to be licensed. Although not required, certification from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) may improve job prospects. Low voltage technicians typically need several years of experience working with low voltage systems before they can advance to supervisory or management positions.

How to become a Low Voltage Technician
