Surgical techs play a vital role in patient care and safety by ensuring that the operating room is clean and sterile, instruments and supplies are ready and that the patient is prepared for surgery.

Becoming a CST requires completing an accredited surgical technology program and passing a national certification exam. Here are some steps to take if you’re interested in becoming a certified surgical technologist:

1. Complete an accredited surgical technology program. There are many accredited programs available across the country, typically lasting about 12-24 months. During your training, you’ll learn about medical terminology, human anatomy, infection control and surgical procedures.

2. Pass the national certification exam. Once you’ve completed an accredited program, you’ll be eligible to take the national certification exam administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). Passing this exam will earn you the credential of Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).

3. Maintain your certification. The CST credential must be renewed every four years through continuing education or re-examination.
