What does a Car Washer do?

A car washer is responsible for cleaning the exterior and interior of a car. This may include washing the car's body, windows, and wheels; vacuuming the carpets and upholstery; and cleaning the dashboard and other surfaces.
Car Washer job duties include:
- Greet customers and ascertain what services they require
- Drive customer's vehicle to assigned bay and operate various manual and automated equipment to wash vehicle exterior and remove any excess water
- Vacuum carpets, upholstery, and other areas of the interior
- Apply revitalizers and preservation treatments to interior vinyl or leather surfaces and treat tires with protective coatings
- Polish, dry, and clean vehicle windshields, windows, taillights, headlights, mirrors, and chrome trim
- May be required to perform minor repairs such as replacing burned out light bulbs
- Wash vehicle exteriors using power washer equipment and apply wax by hand or machine
- Inspect completed work for quality control and ensure that customer is satisfied with results
- Receive payment for services rendered and issue receipts
- Maintain cleanliness of work area
Car Washer Job Requirements
There are no formal education requirements for car washers, although some employers may prefer applicants with a high school diploma or equivalent. There is on-the-job training available for those who are new to the position. No certification is required, but some employers may prefer those who have completed a course in auto detailing. Previous experience is not required, but it is helpful.
