What does a Boilermaker do?

A boilermaker is a craftsman who manufactures, installs, and maintains boilers and other large pressure vessels. Boilermakers assemble, install, maintain, and repair boilers, closed vats, and other large steel containers that hold liquids and gases. They also install the pipes and valves that connect these containers to other equipment.
Boilermaker job duties include:
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine the layout of boilers, pressure vessels, or other metal products
- Mark outlines or dimensions on materials, using scribes, pens, or knives
- Align and fit parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, or hand tools
- Bolt or weld assembled parts together
- Install insulation in boiler casings or on pipes
- Raise completed boilers or tanks into position using derricks and winches
- Perform repairs on existing boilers or pressure vessels
- Inspect completed work to check for conformance to blueprints and specifications
- Test completed boilers or vessels to verify their strength and leak-tightness

How to become a Boilermaker
A Boilermaker is a skilled trade that involves the construction and maintenance of boilers, pressure vessels, and piping systems. Boilermakers fabricate, assemble, maintain, and repair these systems in a variety of industries including power generation, petrochemical, and manufacturing.
Becoming a Boilermaker requires completing an apprenticeship program that typically lasts four years. Apprenticeship programs combine on-the-job training with classroom instruction to give workers the skills they need to be successful in their career.
To become an apprentice Boilermaker, you must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent. You will also need to pass an aptitude test and a physical examination. Some employers may require you to have a valid driver’s license as well. Once you have met all the requirements, you can apply for an apprenticeship with a local union or employer.
During your apprenticeship, you will learn about safety procedures, blueprint reading, welding, math, and physics. You will also gain experience working with tools and equipment. Upon completion of your apprenticeship, you will be able to take the journeyman Boilermaker exam.
Passing the journeyman exam allows you to work independently as a Boilermaker. However, many Boilermakers choose to continue their education by becoming certified welder or welding inspector. Some also go on to get their bachelor’s degree in engineering or another related field.
